Osnabrück, the City of Peace, has been a thriving centre for commerce since the Middle Ages. And with a townscape characterised as much by colourful gabled houses and quaint stone buildings as by small cafés and artsy boutiques, there’s still plenty going on here today. A coffee on the terrace of Vienna House by Wyndham Remarque Osnabrück will give you a front row seat at the heart of the action. From here the historic old town is just a short walk away. The hotel, which was named after the famous writer and Osnabrück native Erich Maria Remarque, is the first choice for a city break or a quick getaway – after all, Osnabrück is surrounded entirely by a nature park. Business travellers can get their business on track in the spacious conference facilities.

Discover Osnabrück
Peace as a mission – committed to peace
Osnabrück has been known as the “City of Peace” ever since the Peace of Westphalia was signed here ending the Thirty Years’ War. Perhaps this is why the happiest Germans live here, as a recent poll showed. Already in the Middle Ages, the fourth largest city in the state of Lower Saxony was an important hub of old trading routes. No wonder, then, that so many businesses have settled in and around this vibrant city.
Where is the journey headed?
On an interesting and varied stroll through the old town or a double decker sightseeing tour, there’s a lot waiting to be discovered in Osnabrück. A good tip: get yourself the Osnabrück CityCard, a ticket for all buses within the city and free admission to several museums. And with your mobile tour guide, the Osnabrück App, in your pocket, you won’t miss a thing – the app even shows you the nearest available parking space.
A city in the green
Osnabrück is the only major German city completely surrounded by a nature park, the UNESCO Global Geopark Terra.vita. Discover the giant redwoods and prehistoric fossils on the Piesberg near the city. An adventure for big and small! The Botanical Garden with its imposing tropical house set amid two former quarries is also worth a visit – and within walking distance.
A city of talent
Famous artists, authors and even a German president hail from Osnabrück. Among them are Erich Maria Remarque, one of the most widely read authors of the 20th century, or Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, an early representative of constructivist art. The Felix Nussbaum House features the world’s most comprehensive collection from the Osnabrück-born painter. The museum is impressive in its own right, built according to a design by the famous architect Daniel Libeskind. Another Osnabrück native, the DJ and record producer Robin Schulz, is currently mixing together the perfect sound in some of the best clubs in the world.
Eat like a local
The original Osnabrück Springbrötchen, a local bread roll, are always worth sinning for – as are the traditional Hedeweggen, a type of raisin bun. If you’re watching your figure, try some local pumpernickel bread. Looking for something more substantial? For a good warm meal try some turnip stew or enjoy the wintertime custom of Grünkohlessen with kale, potatoes and sausages. Top it all off with some chocolates from Leysieffer in Krahnstraße.
A walk through the old town
The market square is a meeting place and centre of life in Osnabrück. Here you’ll find the historic town hall, the city scales and St. Mary’s Church on the one side and colourful townhouses with stepped gables on the other. In addition to the Christmas market, the square hosts the annual Maiwoche festival as well as the custom of hobby horse riding on the anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia. The old town is also perfect for window shopping. A weekly market with lots of regional and seasonal products is held once a week at Große Domfreiheit square.
Additional meeting equipment on request.
